Civil War Graves Remembered

Lt. Thomas Forsyth, Private Dirk Rhynsburger and Private Daniel Dingeman rest in Pella's cemetery.  A few months ago, they were all un-marked.  All were Civil War soldiers from Iowa.

Now only Dingeman remains without a marker.

The 49th Iowa, the Governor's honorary color guard, found them and wants each one to have their own marker and GAR star.  Private Dingeman is the only one left, the cold weather and frosty ground is too hard to dig into.

All three soldiers marched in General Sherman's Army of the Tennessee, blazing a path of destruction through the south as the war drew to a close.

They all survived the war, were buried in Pella, then forgotten, until now.

"If we go through and do the paperwork, we can get them to issue government gravestones and that's exactly what's happened with these three," says David Lamb, commander of the 49th Iowa.

The 49th Iowa is filled with former veterans and blood relatives of civil war soldiers.  On memorial day they will give these veterans a service with full military honors.
