Potholes are a familiar sight for Iowa drivers. Many admit they stay cautious on the road because of them.

"You always got to be on the look out for them and, you know, obviously you drive a little bit more carefully," said Bill Waldron, a metro driver.

"I'm always afraid I'm going to pop a tire if I hit the potholes. I wouldn't know who to blame if that happened," said Deb Paul.

The Des Moines Public Works was out today repairing potholes, but it's only a quick fix.

"They'll last generally for six to eight months and if it goes into the summer months, then we'll come back with some different material to put back in the potholes," said Chuck Burrell, Des Moines Public Works.

So far, a couple hundred potholes have been reported in Des Moines, but now that the weather is clearing up, they expect there to be more.

Public works can be reached at (515) 283-4950 to report trouble spots 24 hours a day.

"If you see a pothole, you can report it, and within two business days we'll be out to repair them. And if every pothole gets reported, we'll use around the clock staff to get these potholes done," said Burrell.

Streets in bad condition with many recurring potholes will go on a list to get resurfaced in the spring.
