Audrey King had a lot of questions about what happened to her son Ricky Meneweather on E. Euclid Street Wednesday evening.

"I'm asking god, is he OK? Because that's the first thing that comes to mind - is your child OK," said King.

Police told her the 12–year–old was crossing near Cambridge Avenue when this Cameron Tracy Hart of Des Moines hit him with his red jeep.

Witnesses told police that Hart looked back at the scene before driving away.

He later called police to say he was in the area at the time of the incident driving a red jeep.

"I know if I would've did it, I would've stopped what I was doing right then and there," said King. "But I'm just glad he had a conscience to know that he did something wrong and he turned himself in."

Ricky is now in fair condition after sustaining an injury to his head, along with other scrapes and bruises.

He was crossing E. Euclid on his way to a middle school dance at Harding Junior High.

"This is a very busy street," said Sgt. Jason Halifax of the Des Moines Police. "East Euclid is generally one of the busiest streets through out the day and night time."

Audrey had told her son not to cross the busy street before, but said she's just grateful he's going to be OK.

"He is a lucky guy," King said. "I really think so. I really do."
