In the winter months, bad weather cancels classes, church and sporting events. It also cancels blood drives.

"Right now we are in urgent need of all blood types," said Beth Phillips of LifeServe Blood Center.

Unlike schools, donation centers can't tack an extra day onto the end of the year to make up for the deficit.

"One thing that we are experiencing is the need to cancel our blood drives because people can't get there, we can't get staff there," said Kara Kelly of the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross canceled 700 blood drives across the nation in January.

"It's equal to if we had to shut down national operations for an entire day, so it's a huge impact on the blood supply," Kelly said.

LifeServe canceled 16 in Iowa. Each pint of blood can save three lives. Longtime donor Paul Menzel has given 111 gallons of blood over the years. Menzel takes ten minutes to donate every two weeks.

"I schedule the blood donations just like going to church," Menzel said.

Bad roads don't keep him from filling one of the many empty seats at LifeServe.

"I'm happy to do my part and as long as God keeps giving me the good health, I'll keep coming back and giving more blood," Menzel said.

Both the Red Cross and LifeServe suggest scheduling an appointment before coming in to donate.
