Winter Storm Challenges Road Crews

The storm that dropped five inches of snow on city streets has been a heavy load for city plows. Snow that fell from Monday night through Tuesday night kept Des Moines Public Works up around the clock.

"We've been on this operation now for the last 36 hours, day and night," said Public Works Director Pat Kozitza.

The long snow span and five inch fall caused more problems than past storms.

"We've had a little bit more volume with this storm, a few more inches of snow here, which makes everything more complicated," Kozitza said. "We still have the same basic procedures but a lot more snow to move now."

Harsh winds make it even tougher to keep snow off the streets, but Kozitza said they'll clear through tomorrow morning.

At this point though, the snow is no stranger.

"These drivers now are pretty seasoned on winter," said Kozitza. "I mean we're not just starting out here."
