Many Iowans are angry with Punxatawney Phil right now, but for some, six more weeks of winter means six more weeks of business.

Central Iowa may not bring slopes to mind, but at Seven Oaks in Boone, pushing through some snow doesn't always refer to shoveling your driveway.

Overcoming Iowa's flat terrain isn't the only uphill battle.

"It can be very tough," said manager Joel Bryan of facing Iowa's changing weather. "Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate, but we've invested heavily in our snowmaking system."

Precipitation can pose a problem, but it's one that can be fixed.

"As long as it's cold enough we can turn approximately 1100 gallons of water a minute into snow," Bryan said.

It's no secret, that we've had plenty of cold. This year it's a double-edged sword.

"We've never closed as many days as what we've closed because of the extreme temperatures this year," said Bryan.

Seven Oaks had to put up the skis during three frigid days in January.

"It seems like when we get reopened again, everyone's excited to get out on the snow and we end up having decent crowds," said Bryan.

With more winter in store, Seven Oaks hopes people will look close to home next time they need to escape.

"There's a lot to do in the state of Iowa," said Bryan. "You just sometimes have to look a little harder, but we're here, we're right in Central Iowa."
