Wells Fargo teamed up with the Warriors Support Foundation to donate a mortgage-free home to an Iowa veteran.

Former U.S. Army Spc. Bradly Hanawalt and his wife, Carla, know the key to their new home is for more than the front door.

"Happiness," said Spc. Hanawalt.

The family walked inside for the first time today.

"It's overwhelming," he said.

"It hit me then, like 'Oh, this is our house,'," Carla added. "It's a really exciting experience."

It's an experience that they almost couldn't experience at all.

"I was hit by a roadside bomb," said Spc. Hanawalt. "I really don't remember much from that day."

Bradly's convoy was blown up in Afghanistan three years ago. He suffered brain and back injuries and a broken jaw. But word that he would be OK eventually reached home.

"When I did hear back it was through a Skype call and it's 'Hey, I'm OK.'," said Carla. "It was an experience."

Now the purple heart recipient appreciates the little things like watching daughters Honey and Lively explore their new rooms.

"They're the ones that make it so surreal," he said. "Just listening to what they say about it just, it's true emotion right there."

The family looked past the shiny new details and toward the memories they hope to create inside.

"Us being together and happy and being warm," he said.

"More focused on each other and the family," added Carla.
