Metro Megachurch Keeps Growing

The largest evangelical Lutheran church in the country ministers right here in the metro.

It's Lutheran Church of Hope, it's also one of the fastest growing churches and they need more room.

Iowans turn a amphitheater into standing room only, listening eagerly to the good book at their home campus in West Des Moines.  It's still not enough room.

Satellite ministries have popped up and now they plan on getting new digs.

Hope in Des Moines gathers at Hubbell Elementary School but the church bought and will move into the old Bill Jensen Chevy dealership on Ingersoll Ave. after renovations.

Hope in Ankeny ministers at Prairie Ridge Middle School.  They just bought 20 acres of land at NW 36th and Ankeny Blvd. for a new building.

For the Johnston and Grimes area, they will move out of Summit Middle school and into the new YMCA that will be built along Grimes Blvd.

Scott Rains, pastor for the Ankeny campus says the key to their growth is connecting to the millennial generation and the young families that populate central Iowa.

"At some point you're just like we're out of room and yet there's more and more people who need the message that we're trying to send," says Rains.

These projects go up into the millions of dollars but the church organized a giving campaign last fall and the congregation has donated to make it happen.
