Main Street Iowa awarded 14 grants to organizations from across the state Tuesday afternoon.

One of those went to a church in Des Moines. Trinity United Methodist has been around for more than a century, but all those years of service have left the building a little outdated.

"The need is immense," said Rev. Barb Dinnen. "This church has been here through thick and thin."

Dinnen has been trying to improve the church at 8th Street and College Avenue for twelve years.

"We've done the sanctuary, we've remodeled the entryway and now we're handicapped accessible," she said.

A few renovations became possible after they won a grant a few years ago, but even more problems lie in the church's basement.

"We are dealing with really antiquated systems," said Dinnen.

The bilingual church uses the space to feed and teach thousands of people in need each year.

"If you were to come after school, you would see this building full top to bottom. Then you would see it fill up again on Tuesday and Thursday nights with English language learners," Dinnen said.

Trinity's plumbing system doesn't support a dishwasher and it has the electrical output of a three bedroom home.

Rev. Dinnen left for the Main Street Iowa Challenge Grants awards ceremony Tuesday afternoon. Her prayers were answered there with a $75,000 check.

"It feels wonderful to be holding the check," Dinnen said. "It gives us a piece of the package that we need to put this big project together."

That check will be matched by the community she loves to serve, and hopes she can now serve even better.

"People come looking for help all the time because they know this is a safe place where everyone receives welcome"
