Housing has been a priority for the Des Moines zoning board for more than a decade.  The Riverpoint West development plan has been a major project and the board took a big step.

City planners are excited about these two major projects.  Sherman Associates' Nexus at Gray's Landing on S.W. 11th  St. and Hubbell Realty's Brownstones on Fifth Street.  Their hopes are hundreds of Iowans will move into this market based living.

The zone approved both plans to continue forward.

After the recession hit a few years ago, developers and city planners have seen a major push for downtown and urban living, broadening out to other areas of midtown.

"Very excited to see both these projects coming in and we hope that it's just the beginning of many more," says Michael Ludwig, a city planner for Des Moines.

This is another add on to Hubbell's CityVille phased construction.  The city planner estimates the Nexus project will break ground in the spring.
