The Secret Service is investigating a major data breach at Targets across the United States.

Over 40 million customer credit and debit cards were breached shortly after Black Friday and continued through December 15th.

The information was believed to have been lifted from around 40,000 devices at 1,800 store registers. Online customers were not effected by the breach.

Hackers were granted access to data stored on the magnetic strip of cards used in stores.

This breach allows the hackers to create usable counterfeit versions of customer cards if they're not disabled in time. They could also pull money from ATM's if they were able to intercept the PIN numbers. However, at this time, it's unknown if the PIN numbers have been compromised, as well.

Customers affected by this breach will likely be reimbursed, but not until after the Christmas season.
