Des Moines police say a man driving a vehicle matching a witness' description and later found with self-inflicted injuries has been released.

This all stems from the robbery of a West Bank branch on Southwest 9th Street Wednesday afternoon.

Des Moines police say the witness who identified the suspect wasn't able to keep him in view and had apparently gotten him confused with the driver of another vehicle.

Wednesday night before 8 p.m., a Polk County Sheriff's Deputy located a vehicle matching both the description and plates the witness had given.

The Deputy followed the vehicle into a Walmart parking lot in Altoona before ordering the driver out of the vehicle.

When the driver came out, police say he was suffering from self–inflicted stab wounds. The man was treated at a local hospital before agreeing to questioning.

After an interview, police say they determined the man was not the suspect and was allowed to leave.

Police say the man's stab wounds were due to mental issues he had and weren't related to robbery accusations.

Police will now be looking for any video the bank may have captured of the robber.
