Police say they almost always see an uptick in home burglaries during the holidays.

"You drive around a neighborhood or sit in a neighborhood a little bit and it's pretty easy to tell who's home and who's not," said Sgt. Gary Lang of the Urbandale Police Department.

As people celebrate what's often called the "giving season," some are focused on taking.

"Burglaries and stuff are up a little bit during the holiday season," Lang said.

Police say there are several measures you can take to keep your home safe during the holidays. Double check that windows and doors are locked at all times. Leaving a light on even while you're out of town can keep burglars at bay.

"It's not going to cost you that much to leave a porch light on and it's a great deterrent," Lang said. "The bad guys, the burglars, don't like light."

Mary Rowley of Urbandale has celebrated a decade of Christmases in her home without any issues, but still takes precautions.

"We keep the doors locked," Rowley said. "We do have our own alarm system – dogs in the back. Very helpful."

For those without dogs to keep watch, police recommend looking next door.

"The best defense against a home burglary is the neighborhood and neighbors talking to neighbors," Lang said.

Bob Dressler keeps an eye on his Urbandale neighborhood.

"I think just by being aware and kind of trying to get to know your neighbors, say 'hi' and they know you're there and they know where you're at," said Dressler.

As your neighbor's best defense from being burglarized during the holidays, police say if you see something, say something.

"We'd rather check out what might be nothing several times than to not get the call when we really need it," Lang said.

The Urbandale Police Department will check on your home while you're out of town, you can sign up for that here.
