Holiday Mailing Deadlines Quickly Approaching

The United States Postal Service is working around the clock to make sure everything makes it on time for Christmas… but it's not easy.

The packages are piling up. On a normal day, the Des Moines Post Office on 2nd Avenue would receive 20,000 packages. However, on Christmas, it's a different story.

"We think about 100,000 will come in and out of the facility the next night or two. We're running through lunch hours, breaks, to constantly keep the mail moving," said Cheryl Love, Des Moines Postmaster.

For the first time ever, they had to hire people to manually toss packages in addition to running their machines. They are also using Sunday's to deliver.

"We delivered packages last Sunday, which was really unprecedented for us. We haven't done that in years and we anticipate we'll deliver packages this Sunday too," said Love.

Wednesday, the lobby was full of people trying to send packages over the lunch hour.

"Try to make it by Monday," said a customer.

"It's not guaranteed, but we're working 24/7," said a clerk.

They were sending last minute gifts all over the country.

"I only have four today, going all over the country, Minnesota, North Carolina, New York. Hopefully the weather will be ok to get them there," said another customer.

The closer to Christmas we get, the higher the prices will be to send those packages and letters.
