Maggie Howe doesn't have much to harvest on her Woodward farm now, but during the summertime...

"We grow a lot of tropical herbs," said Howe.  "Things like lemongrass, eucalyptus and then all the standards: basils, sage, thyme, oregano, a little bit of lavender. (It) doesn't grow really well here."

What has grown well is Howe's herb business.

"Business has been great," said Howe.

Prairieland Herbs makes all-natural products like oils, lotions and bath salts.

"Our primary goal is to make things to put on our body," said Howe.

They're kind of like a mom and pop Bath and Body Works.

"Bath salts are very popular in the winter time," said Howe.

She and her mom started the business 15 years ago out of their home.  A year later they opened a small store behind their house.
"People have really been embracing buying local within the last 5 to 7 years, so more people are seeking us out," said Howe.

They're also seeking out products that don't contain any artificial chemicals, colors or preservatives.

"Certainly within the last decade, people have really become aware and been asking questions about what they put on their body," said Howe.  "They're reading labels."

Customers from as far away as Hong Kong order Maggie's herbs.

"We have very regular customers in the U.K. and Australia, all parts of Canada," said Howe.

Howe also does a lot of business on what she calls "Sample Sunday."

"Each farm invites our fellow farmer friends, artisans and local people who have wonderful works to sell," said Howe.  "Kind of like a little farmer's market."

But the bottom line for Maggie and Prairieland Herbs...

"It's important to take care of what you put on your body."

Howe says she does most of her business online. We have a link to her website here.
