The anticipation of winter weather is a big reason to have your car checked over, but will you be able to find an open spot at an auto shop?

Many metro auto shops are filling up and some are even booked into next week.

"We are more booked than I can remember, in recent times anyway," said Skip Craig, Customer Experience Manager at Firestone in West Des Moines.

Auto shops, like Firestone, haven't been this booked all year. Craig came to work early and to his surprise, he had people coming to the door and asking him if they could get in.

"We don't actually open until 7 a.m. and I was here this morning about 6 a.m. At 6:15 I had people knocking on the door. They were asking, "Hey can I get in today?" "Can you get me in now, can you get me in tomorrow, or this weekend, please?"

Staff across the metro is working extra hours just to stay caught up.

"We had to keep a really tight staff so we could get every car in and out efficiently," said Tyler Saner, Valley West Service Center.

All of the cars coming in need different snow preparations.

"Snow tire changeovers, snow tire purchases, people wanting inspections, making sure that their coolant and other fluid levels are up to the task for the oncoming cold," said Craig.

The key is to make sure your old tires are changed so they have traction when the snow and ice arrive.

"Replace them, going into winter, before they get to that state," said Craig.

Will there be a change in pace? Probably not.

"Now ramping up for Christmas, I don't expect things to slow down at all," said Craig.

Auto shops say calling ahead and making an appointment is the best way to assure you have a spot.
