The cold weather is well on its way and that means it's time to winterize. MidAmerican offers free home energy checks to their customers.

Auditor Cory Amos checks about four or five homes for energy efficiency each day. He scans the furnace, light bulbs and windows to make sure heat stays inside of homes.

"This is something we've had in place since the mid-1990s," said MidAmerican Energy representative Abby Bottenfield. "It is a very popular program."

They do it at no cost to their customers, like Jeanette and Curt Smith, who had their home examined today.

Amos even screwed in new efficient light bulbs and added water saving appliances. MidAmerican also offers rebates on the bigger fixes.

"A lot of people don't know that buying the caulking, the cans of foam, the weather stripping for doors -- there's actually a rebate for that stuff," said Amos.

One of those big fixes for the Smith home will be new insulation.

"It's good to have an energy audit because we'll peek in your attic for you," Amos said.

The Smith's said it's a service they appreciate.

"Any little bit of cool air that we can keep out or hot air in the summer time is going to help on our comfort and cost of heating or cooling the house," Curt said.
