Police say a student parked his car in a lot at 29th St. and University Ave. on the Drake Campus.

Two men allegedly walked up to him pointing a gun. They stole his wallet, cell phone, keys, and  they drove off in his car.

"We do see this from time to time," said Sgt. Jason Halifax of the Des Moines P.D. "We have not had anything in the recent past either in the Drake area or citywide," he added.

Police are asking for help in locating the suspects and the stolen black Mitsubishi Eclipse.

"They should not approach it, nor should they approach anyone who may be in the car," Halifax said.

For the people who park in that lot each day, the carjacking started some conversation.

"It's definitely an uneasy sort of thought, just because crime does happen around here," said one student.

"That's what you can expect having a college in a kind of urban area like this," another student said.

Most students said they do feel safe on campus.

"It doesn't make me worried or scared to go out because these things happen in places all over."

They expressed confidence in the school's security.

"I think they're doing all they can within the realm of reasonable action."

And they take precautions before heading out in the Drake neighborhood at night.

"Know the situation," said one student. "I just don't go in certain areas during certain times of the day to keep myself safe."

A Drake Security representative said they constantly patrol the campus. They said they will step up those patrols after this incident.

The suspects were described as two black men in their twenties wearing hooded sweatshirts. The stolen black Mitsubishi Eclipse has Kansas plates. Anyone with information should call police or the Polk County Crime Stoppers.
