Members of Iowa's Democratic party packed into the 4– H building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

They were there to raise money for Braley's campaign for retiring Senator Tom Harkin's open seat.

Supporters came for Braley's 9th annual "Bruce, Blues, and BBQ" grassroots fundraiser.

They also got to hear from former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Capt. Mark Kelly. Giffords was shot in the head during a public meeting with some of her Arizona constituents in 2011.

Braley opened by reading a letter that he received from her during his first run for congress.

Kelly also spoke, recalling Gabby's return to the House floor. She voted on the debt ceiling eight months after the Tucson incident.

"To have her voice heard on a very important day, just one more time," remarked Kelly.

Braley said he remembers her return and their first exchange.

"I gave her a hug and I said, 'Do you feel the love in this room?' She said, 'Yes, I feel it.' I said, 'I am so proud of you.' She said, 'I'm proud of myself,'" Braley recalled.

Gabby stepped up to the podium as well.

"I'm still fighting to make the world a better place and you can too. Be passionate, be courageous, be your best," she said.
