In the last year, Ames has seen a major growth in national chain stores that have been built in the area. This is giving people reasons to come to Ames and shop.

Earlier in 2013, stores such as TJ Maxx, Kohl's and Shoe Carnival have been built as part of the North Grand Mall's redevelopment project. Sports Authority and Petco are also having their grand openings this Saturday.

This growing trend of national stores is partially because of Iowa State University's record enrollment of 33,000 students and also Ames growing population.

"Just the population in Ames has kind of boomed and because of this, retailers are realizing that Ames is a place that they want to be," said Lauren Frandsen, Ames Chamber of Commerce.

This business boom is giving people a reason to stay and shop in Ames.

"I love it! I always ended up going to Des Moines or Ankeny to shop and never came to North Grand Mall, so I'm just really excited that these new stores are coming in. I come here all the time, I'm even here over my lunch break!" said Glori Larpenter, Ames.

"It's about 5-10 minutes to get here instead of 45 minutes to Des Moines so it's really nice," said Kira Bundy, Ames.

The stores are also giving people employment opportunities.

"I'm happy they arrived and I believe this is helping our economy in the Ames area. It's given us plenty of job opportunities, more than what the normal North Grand Mall did, but right now I think the opportunities are a lot better for everybody that's here," said Mimi Davis, Ames.

"We can't offer everything that Des Moines has, but we're definitely growing and offering things that they have that attract more people to come to Ames to shop," said Frandsen.
