Alice's Road Bridge over I-80 is going to be something Iowa has never seen before.

Interstate cars and trucks that rumble under the newly paved bridge will soon drive under diverging diamond interchange.

The Iowa DOT says it's both safer and easier.  It's going to be the first one in Iowa.

The goal is to stop drivers from the dangerous turn left into on-coming traffic.  To stop that there will be a light that stops on-coming traffic, while the driver turns left into the other lane and onto the interstate.  Every so often the light will change and the other side goes.

"They operate efficiently because they take out that left turn movement and they're a smaller footprint and so it takes less land in this developable area," says Troy Jerman from the Iowa DOT.

Construction on the $30 million project is slated to begin next April.
