Permit Problem in Waukee

Believe it or not some vacant lots sit empty in Waukee because it's just too expensive to build there.

It looks like that might be changing. Now there's an effort to lower Waukee's residential development permit fees from $5,000 a lot, to $2,800.

The Waukee fee is much higher than other western suburbs. Urbandale's stands at $2,800 and the other cities aren't higher than $3,600.

With 600 lots waiting to build in Waukee now and that number doubling next year, any small difference will be a big deal.

"We have tremendous opportunities going for us and we just want to make sure as we move forward in the future that we continue to have these opportunities," says Waukee City Councilman Isaiah McGee.

This ordinance was approved 4 to 1 on the first reading by the City Council.  There's two more readings and votes before this becomes reality.
