An early morning break-in Thursday in Des Moines left a giant hole in a homeowners garage.

This happened on Southeast 8th street around 5 a.m. The thief was caught by the homeowners, trying to steal stuff from their garage and throwing it into their vehicle.

When he was caught in the pickup truck as police surrounded the garage. The suspect Benjamin Algreen took off in the truck, bursting right through the back of the garage.

"We were standing where the garage door is and just seen our truck go through the backyard and plow through our fence and all you're thinking is 'Oh my god, that is mine! This is so wrong,'" says Lori Clark who owns the home.

Police caught up with Algreen after he crashed into a tree.

By late afternoon the garage had been repaired but the homeowners say there was $70-80,000 of damage.

Algreen is facing five separate charges including 3rd degree burglary, interference with official acts and criminal mischief.
