Fires are raging across the American West and Iowans have been sent in to help out.

Part of Carrol native Ryan Schlater's role as the DNR's fire specialist is training local firefighters.  Part of those teaching qualifications is going out west to fight these forest fires, but he says he'd go out anyway.

He just arrived with two other firefighters from Cedar Rapids in Taylorville, California. They are right in the middle of a valley consumed by several fires. The fires they fight range from several to hundreds of acres of flames.

Schlater is in command of two of DNR's off road vehicles.  They'll come in handy in such rough terrain.

Nineteen firefighter died in Arizona battling similar fires and Schlater says that puts a weight on his and his crew's minds.

"You're in an area you haven't been before.  So here we are walking around in the woods.  They just gave us a briefing that there's mountain lions and rattlesnakes and then of course the fire as well," says Ryan Schlater from the Iowa DNR.

Schlater and his crew work the night shift.  This is day two of their 14 day requirement.
