Des Moines, IA - Brooks Raley tossed eight shutout innings and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth to lift the Iowa Cubs (56-65) over the Fresno Grizzlies (56-64) 3-0 on Saturday night at Principal Park. The Cubs have won four straight games and lead the series 3-0 heading into Sunday's finale.
Raley gave up a leadoff single to Gary Brown in the first but didn't allow another hit until Chris Dominguez singled to start the seventh. Raley didn't surrender another hit and tossed a season-high eight scoreless innings. He walked two, struck out three, and forced 15 groundouts in the game.
It is Raley's first win since June 24, despite recording three quality starts between victories.
Raley helped the team at the plate as well, legging out an infield single and scoring the Cubs' first run in the sixth inning. Dave Sappelt put Raley into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and Jae-Hoon Ha drove him home on a line-drive double to left. Ha has hit safely in a season-high 12 straight games.
Ha made it a 2-0 Iowa lead after Fresno committed its league-worst 136th error of the season. Edgar Gonzalez popped one up to shallow center field that dropped for a single after Gary Brown lost the ball in the lights. The throw back to the infield got away from right-fielder Juan Perez, allowing Ha to scamper home.
The Cubs tacked on a run in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Ty Wright. Sappelt led off the inning with a single and Ha followed with a walk. Sappelt tagged and went to third on a Gonzalez fly out to deep right field and extended the Cubs' lead to 3-0 on Wright's hit up the middle.
Chang-Yong Lim got the first out in the ninth before allowing two walks. Marcos Mateo took care of the final two batters to preserve the two-hit shutout.
Fresno starter Eric Surkamp turned in a strong outing on the mound. The lefty allowed two runs - one earned - on six hits over seven innings but took the loss for the Grizzlies. It is Surkamp's third consecutive start allowing just one earned run over seven innings. He had won the previous two outings.
The Cubs and Grizzlies will play the final game of the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05. RH Yoanner Negrin (3-5, 4.82 ERA) will start for Iowa against LH Mike Kickham (5-7, 4.78 ERA) for Fresno.
