Million Dollar Marathon runners made their way up to the Capitol Wednesday morning. Cancer survivors passed off a special baton on their way.

"We're carrying the baton from the Papa John Center to the State Capitol," said Above and Beyond founder, Charlie Wittmack.

Runners made their way through the streets of Des Moines and through the climbing temperatures.

They ran to support the survivors, but they also passed along a baton filled with the names of the ones who didn't make it.

"They're running in their memory or in their honor and carrying them with them along their route all the way to the Atlantic."

The heat didn't keep runners at home. Businesses like the YMCA put teams together to raise money.

"Just taking a break from work and coming out and getting a mile of exercise is going to be really good," said YMCA team member Mary Bolling. "I'm excited."

Even the teams who came out with their co–workers said it's about more than the money.

"I think everyone's life in some way has been affected by cancer," Bolling said. "Whether it's a family, friend or relative - Everyone can benefit from an event like this."

Each step and dollar donated by Des Moines goes toward cancer research.

"Cancer is a community problem and if we're going to find a solution it's going to have to be a community solution," Wittmack said. "We're so pleased to have the community out today to be a part of this event."

Once they made it to the steps of the Capitol, survivors passed off the baton and took their journey on toward the Atlantic Ocean.
