For the second time in less than two weeks, Des Moines Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting.

Thursday morning, Detective Yanira Scarlett, an 11 year veteran of the Des Moines Police Department, was the officer involved.

Detective Scarlett was investigating an unrelated case when she noticed Tyjuan Tucker assaulting a woman inside of a car.

"The vehicle stopped, or it was very slow moving, and how it's been described to me, she could actually see an assault going on or some kind of altercation," explained Sgt. Jason Halifax, a spokesman for the Des Moines Police Department.

When Scarlett stopped the vehicle, Tucker broke the back window and tried to escape.

"The female detective began to give the male individual commands like 'get down' and things of that nature. Indications right now are that he began to come towards her and chase her. At some point during that confrontation, she did draw her weapon and fired one shot at him and it did strike him once in the torso," said Halifax.

Many of the neighbors in the area heard the single shot.

"I just woke up this morning and I heard a gun shot and I just came outside and seeing all the police officers on my street, so I decided to take a walk down to see what happened," said a neighbor on 19th Street.

Tucker has been taken to Methodist Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and once he is released, he faces multiple charges of assault including assaulting a police officer.

Detective Scarlett has been placed on paid administrative leave.
