All journeys have to start somewhere.  The Million Dollar Marathon started on the coast of the Pacific Ocean.  The splendor of blue sky, gentle clouds, and a vast ocean made for a memorable starting line.  This coast marked the beginning of a mind–body–spirit journey across the entire country.

On June 23rd, a small group of cancer survivors, caregivers, and supporters gathered on the beach near Ocean Shores, Washington for the beginning of the Million Dollar Marathon.

Dr. Richard Deming said, "All we have to do to get from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean is run one more step... 10 million times, but just one more step."

Deming is a cancer doctor in Des Moines and one of the founders of the group, Above and Beyond Cancer.  They take cancer survivors on incredible climbs up to mountain tops in far away corners of the globe.  On this day, in Washington, on the Pacific coast it was time to start another adventure.

Deming told the group, "Because we don't live forever, we have today.  We have today to make a difference."

Everyone in the group took time to share their story, their connection to cancer and everybody had one. Then it was time to get moving.  Dr. Deming dipped the baton into the ocean and the Million Dollar Marathon started.

Everyone who's running in this cross–country relay will help in the fight against cancer.  The runners are raising money for research and survivor programs, hoping to hit the one million dollar mark.

This coast–to–coast adventure will happen one step at a time over the course of about 40 days, until they dip the baton into the Atlantic Ocean.
