Fighting flames and smoke is normally the job for Des Moines' firefighters.  But fighting bullets is something they call disturbing.

A single bullet hit a fire truck Friday morning.  Officials say around 4 a.m., firefighters were called to the 2200 Block of East Rose for an alarm.

They found no fire and the crew began to pack up when they heard gunshots and saw a muzzle flash nearby.

The crew called it in and police came out and caught up with 19 year old Alonzo Kearney.

Firefighters say this is a first.

"This is probably the first time one of our fire trucks have been struck by bullets.  So yea it is disturbing.  It's one of those things that don't happen everyday. But you do have to be aware of your surroundings and be prepared for anything on this job," says Capt. Steve Brown from Des Moines Fire.

Kearney remains in the Polk County Jail on a $40,000.
