'Environment Iowa' gathered on the capitol steps Tuesday morning in an effort to protect Iowa's waterways.

The group is urging the state senate to start protecting the state's rivers and streams from agricultural runoff.

The runoff includes everything from fertilizers to manure that generally ends up in the Iowa soil and then into Iowa waterways.

Some farmers said enough is enough and steps need to be made to reduce these pollutants.

"We let excess fertilizer and especially manure into our waterways, ruining the land and the water and the air, that we stand on, breathe from and drink from everyday," said Iowa farmer Garry Klicker.

The group says that they will continue to push for legislation when the general assembly meets in January.
