Hundreds of volunteers and artists flooded into downtown Thursday to prepare for this weekend's Des Moines Arts Festival.

Here are the hours for the festival:

Friday, June 28 - 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.

Saturday, June 29 - 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.

Sunday, June 30 - 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

"I think the great thing about this arts festival... is that the artist is here," said Stephen King, executive director for the Des Moines Arts Festival.

Steve Huffman is one of the artists experiencing set-up for the first time.

"My hat's off to the citizens of Des Moines," Huffman said.

He makes sculptures from metal found at scrap yards.

"If there's a chain in the scrap yard it's going home with me," he said.

Huffman started four years ago, and this is the largest festival where he's displayed his work.

"It just gets better with age," said Huffman.

His trademark sculpture is of a buffalo who has a glass eye than can look right back at you.

"Well, the buffalo probably took me about a month and a half," he said.  "But what you'll find, is it takes me longer to find the pieces than it does to actually construct the sculpture."

Huffman's among 185 other artists, along with singers and sponsors coming together so central Iowans can experience art at a festival that draws hundreds of thousands of people.

"It's easily accessible to everybody," said King. "And just a real sense of people being here and being part of a community."

The festival is free.  Roads downtown will open back up at 5:30 Monday morning.
