On Friday, Walnut Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue, was filled with people eating and listening to music.

The "Welcome Back to Walnut Street" event is part of a project to bring people to downtown and to rebuild the area as a pedestrian walkway.

"This and Nollen Plaza are what it's going to take to rebuild the core. We fixed up the core in the 1980's, but that was 30 years ago and it's time to do it again. And since we've been working our way through all the other neighborhoods downtown, this is the piece that puts it all back together again," said Glenn Lyons, CEO of Downtown Community Alliance.

The event continues on Saturday with more vendors, art galleries and live music.
