The first day of summer came with increased heat and humidity spreading across the state.

People should be checking on friends, relatives and neighbors especially if they have health issues or don't have air conditioning. Also, pets shouldn't be forgotten outside or without cold water.

For those people who work outdoors, the necessary precautions should be taken.

"If you're outside in the hot weather this weekend, the best thing you can do to avoid heat stroke or heat exhaustion is to make sure you take frequent breaks in the shade or preferably air conditioning and make sure that you're drinking cold water all day– before, during and after being outside," said Sarah Boese, Department of Public Health.

If the heat becomes extreme, Des Moines and the metro areas will open their cooling centers.
