Popular Indy Race Gives Town a Boost

If you go nearby the Iowa Speedway it might be a little noisy.  But the noise would be coming from trucks and crews preparing the track, and surrounding area for this weekend.

Famous drivers are set to race in the Iowa Corn Indy 250 this Sunday.

"It's entertainment, it's speed," said Doug Fritz, Iowa Speedway CEO.

The race brings thousands to Newton and Central Iowa who enjoy the surrounding towns between races, which is just what Michele Williams is hoping for.

She cut a ribbon with the Newton Chamber of Commerce Thursday to open her brand new bookstore.

"It's a dream come true," Williams said.

She hopes her store can benefit directly or indirectly from all the visitors.

"It brings in a lot of new people to our town, and I know when I travel out of town," she said. "One of things I want to do is see small town businesses and what's there."

When Maytag left Newton years ago it had severely damaged the towns economy, but with these races and other new businesses coming in to raise Newton's profile.

"The thing about Newton is that it's a pretty resilient town," said Williams.
