Starting on July 1st Des Moines' cemeteries may seem a little less colorful because every pinwheel, ornament and misplaced flower will need to be removed.

You can leave approved planted flowers in front of the gravestones and on both ends, but the city does not allow them to get out of control and take over other plots.

Des Moines officials want people to take any valuable keepsakes from the gravesites to prevent them from throwing it away.

They have these regular clean-ups because they must clear the areas to mow directly next to the gravestones.

"The more money we have to spend on mowing and trimming," said Jen Fletcher, Des Moines Cemeteries,  "The less we have to maintain the infrastructure and things like that."

You can put decorations back on July 27th, but will need to move them in October once another clean-up comes around.
