A 13-year-old boy allegedly led police on a car chase in Ankeny Sunday night. Police say the boy was drunk at the time of the chase.

"When you have these chases, you're expecting somebody who has a little bit of a past of being involved in trouble: your more serious criminals and people that are running for more serious violations," explained Sgt. Robert Kovacs of the Ankeny Police Department.

When Sgt. Kovacs tried to stop the 13-year-old, the boy kept on driving. Police chased him through residential Ankeny.

He drove through construction barricades on Southeast Peterson Drive. At one point police say they thought he was going to stop, but he continued to drive.

The boy eventually lost control going around a turn and slammed into a tree. Police say the boy complied when they pulled him from the car.

He allegedly stole it from his grandma.

"To be honest, when the chase was over he was very scared, he was frightened, and I think at the time that this chase ended he realized he made a big mistake," said Kovacs.

The boy faces traffic violations of reckless driving and driving without a license.

He's also charged with eluding police and operating while intoxicated, which are both serious misdemeanors.
