Des Moines plans to call in almost their entire police force to help RAGBRAI's visit go smoothly.

Thousands of bikers will arrive in Des Moines on July 23rd and stay until the 24th.

Their official campsite will be Des Moines Water Works Park, and then all the commercial tents and events will be located downtown.

Police plan to call in most of the force to help regulate traffic and add to security, which will means up to 70 extra officers on the job besides the regular number of police out on patrol.

"By far, the majority of our officers will be assigned, in uniform, working some kind of patrol, whether it's extra duty, or just regular street patrol," said Sgt. Jason Halifax, Des Moines P.D.

The fire department will also bring in off duty fire fighters and ambulances.  They will be joining police at the campsites and on Court Ave.

You can expect heavy delays traveling in and out of downtown during those two days.  Police think drivers will notice the stop's mostly on Wednesday when the bikers leave Des Moines.

Officers will be intermittently stopping traffic on East 14th and East 15th near downtown.

"Essentially, it's going to cut the city in half," said Sgt. Halifax.
