Two mobile speed units will launch in Polk County on Monday.

Speed cameras sit behind the windshields of two new Jeep Patriots. The vehicles will be placed outside of city limits.

"Probably just areas where there are the fewest amount of stop lights or stop signs, the traffic control devices," said Sgt. Jana Abens of the Polk County Sheriff's Office. "Just an area of pretty good distance where you don't have any of those devices so people tend to pick up speed whether it's intentional or not."

There is an appeals process for people who get tickets. Like the Des Moines Police Department's mobile unit, the cars are marked.

"A lot of times just the police presence will encourage people to slow down," Abens said.

A lot of people say they're just not in favor of the unmanned cars.

"I don't think they're fair," said Brian Bemisdarfer of Des Moines. "You didn't even know that you got a ticket. That's wrong."

"You're driving down, you see a car parked on the side of the street, next thing you know you get a ticket in the mail or however they send it," said Terry Bates of Des Moines. "That's not fair. That's not right."

Fines will range from $65 to more than $80 depending on speed. Some people say there's an easier solution than getting a ticket in the mail.

"When I hear people kind of griping about the speed cameras everywhere, I say, 'stop speeding,'" said Heather Carey of Des Moines. "I'm sure they'd have a problem with it if it boiled down to them being hit by someone else that was speeding."

For the first thirty days, the mobile speed units will only be sending out warnings.

On Monday, June 17th and Tuesday, June 18th the speed cars will be out at the 6500 block of NE 41st Ave. and the 4000 block of NE 94th Ave.
