Shootings Surge in Des Moines Neighborhood

A drive-by on Thursday night marks six shootings in the last week.

"We get calls for shots all the time," said Sgt. Jason Halifax of the Des Moines P.D. "That's really a pretty common thing."

What's not as common, is the fact that they're all happening in the same area.

The Evelyn Davis Park neighborhood has been taking the brunt of the crime surge. Police aren't sure whether the shootings are related or what's causing them.

"There's no one thing that we can say 'OK, this is why it's happening,'" said Halifax.

Victims have indicated that it could be gang related. Police usually ramp up their patrol on the neighborhood during the summer months anyway, but they may be out on the streets in larger numbers even sooner.

"We have discussed a little bit about whether or not we will begin that earlier this year, we haven't come to a solid conclusion on that," Halifax said. "If this type of stuff keeps up or escalates, that's obviously a real possibility."

Police are already spending more time in the area, but say the best way to get the bottom of these shootings is with the public's help.

"All of these crimes, these shootings, these drive–bys, they can be solved if we get help from the public," Halifax said.

Police urge anyone with information on these shootings to come forward.

That can be done anonymously by calling the Polk County Crime Stoppers at 515-223-1400.
