There's a new high-end place to stay and play at in the metro, but it's not for you. It's for your four-legged friends.
The owner of the soon-to-open Dogwoods Lodge in Grimes hopes to take grooming, training, lodging and day camp in the metro to the next level.
Jessica Lohry is the top dog here at the new Dogwoods Lodge. It's been two years in the making since she decided to expand her dog training business Pooch Academy.
"If you're a good trainer you don't see your clients again, and I found as a business owner that was really difficult because you were constantly having to find new clients," she said.
She took her love of dogs and the outdoors to make this lodge-themed doggie oasis complete with private chalets with patios, a salon, a nap room and lots of outdoor space.
"I went and I traveled the country," Lohry said. "I did a lot of kennel visits in Minnesota and Wisconsin to kind of see what Midwesterners were really interested in."
Upscale finishes can be found throughout the facility like an automatic water bowl replenisher and motion detectors. Lohry's investment goes behind the brick and mortar and into her staff.
"You can have a beautiful facility but if I've got a staff that doesn't know anything about dogs, people are going to come in upset."
She's even bringing in a trainer from New York.
While there are other pet resorts around the metro, Lohry believes Des Moines doesn't have anything quiet like her's, but is ready for it.
"It's not even about expensive taste," she said. "It's just about people wanting better quality for their dogs."
Dogwoods Lodge will have a soft opening at the end of March with a grand opening some time in April or May.
