The City of Des Moines gave the final go ahead this week to a new development called "Cityville on 9th."

A barren plot of land will offer a lot more than just views of downtown and easy access to SW 9th St. once it's home to what's known as Cityville on 9th.

"We feel the time is right," said Steve Niebuhr with Hubbell Realty, who is behind the project. It will sit on 9th and Dart Way just south of MLK Pkwy.

The three phase project will include a total of 339 apartments and commercial/retail space on the first floor. Niebuhr said their other properties downtown are fully rented and the demand for more living is high.

"We see a lot of young people. We see a lot of people who are looking for a change in their life."

Also on the property will be a private dog park for residents of Cityville.

"It was something that we we're continually being asked by people who were coming and looking to rent, and we thought this would be a great opportunity to incorporate it," said Niebuhr.

These one and two bedroom apartments will be market rate, not income restricted.

City leaders said it's a prime development spot that they're excited to see coming to life. Niebuhr believes it's an area people will be anxious to move to.

"We're able to offer a lot of the amenities you might expect with a south side or suburban product like free on-site parking, but yet we'll be very close to downtown."

They hope to break ground on Cityville by the spring. And right next to it, along MLK Pkwy, there is also huge plans for more living and commercial space to be called Gray's Landing.
