The old firehouse at 900 Mulberry St. has been around since 1937, and today, it was emptied for the first time in 76 years.

The Auction Outlet of Des Moines hosted the firehouse auction, and they said it was a rare event for the city.

"This is definitely a lot of items, it's going to be one of the longest ones we've had, so it's kind of neat," said Sande Matchinsky, the owner of Auction Outlet of Iowa. "A lot of nostalgia here in the building, it was built in 1937 and now it's not going to be there any longer."

Everything from old ladders to office furniture was up for grabs. They even had a few items from the police station and Des Moines Public Works.

"It's kind of a chance for all of the city to clean house a little bit, and they had a good crowd," said Matchinsky.

Proceeds from the auction go right back to the city, and Matchinsky said this was the only chance to take home some pretty unique items.

The old firehouse has to be cleared out by March 1st, when the Des Moines Social Club will begin their plans to fill the space with a new theater and restaurant.
