The family issued a missing persons report on February 8th. 12 year old Karina Rodriguez-Resendiz has been missing since then.
Her family believes she's with her boyfriend, 18 year old Sergio Lopez. Lopez is wanted by police for failing to show up to court. That charge was third degree sexual assault, for having sex with a minor.
Lopez has a no contact order with Rodriguez-Resendiz.
"Apparently they've had a relationship in the past. Boyfriend/girlfriend relationship of some kind. That was the reason we thought they were together," says Sgt. Jason Halifax with Des Moines PD.
12 year old Karina's mom dropped her off at Meredith Middle School on February 8th.
But later that day the school contacted the mother saying Karina never showed up for class.
That launched a nationwide search for the missing girl and her boyfriend, a search that continues to this day.
"Evidence that we have suggests that Karina has left voluntarily. Given the fact that she's under 18 years of age. If she is contacted she will be brought back to her parents," says Sgt. Halifax.
Karina's family says their daughter and Sergio have been dating since last October. Right now this is a missing person case, not an abduction.
"This does not appear as a situation that she was taken forcibly or taken against her will. So that eliminates the abduction at this point. Evidence can come out later that would suggest that being an abduction; but at this point we don't believe that that is the case," says Sgt. Halifax.
Police have located Lopez's red ford explorer, so they do not know how they are traveling. There is a strong possibility they have left the state.
If you know any information on their whereabouts; Des Moines Police would like you to contact them.
