It was a small but deadly fire on 5th St. in downtown Des Moines Wednesday night. Fire Capt. Steve Brown says one adult male died on the 12th floor.

A 911 call came in just after 8:30 p.m. from the alarm monitoring company in charge of Ligutti Towers apartments at 555 5th St.

Firefighters responded and were surprised to find the sprinklers had activated. When they got into apartment 1202 there was light smoke. They found the deceased male sitting in a chair. He is not being identified at this time.

The fire was contained to the one apartment. The sprinklers put it out before firefighters arrived and caused water damage to the 10th and 11th floors. Some residents were moved out of their apartments but were able to go back in by 10:30 p.m.

Brown says an autopsy will most likely be performed Thursday to determine the cause of death. He says there was no obvious sign for what caused the fire so an investigation has began.
