Most people are probably at least somewhat familiar with radon:  the colorless, odorless gas that enters buildings through the ground.

The EPA and the Iowa Department of Health suggest everyone test their homes during January, which is Radon Action Month.

Radon detector kits can be bought for about $10.

Homeowners take the test and mail it to a lab.

The company will send it back with the results of the test.

If a building tests for a high enough level of radon, it's then suggested a radon filtering system be installed.

"The level of radon varies throughout the US. It's very high in Iowa and yes it's a known carcinogen for lung cancer," said Mariannette Miller Meeks, director for the Iowa Department of Health.
