Just because it's cold out, it doesn't mean you can't get out and exercise.

In fact, there are several ways to stay active outdoors this winter.

"Being outside during the winter is equally as important as being outside in the summer," said Aaron Rector, a doctor with Active Wellness Chiropractic and Rehabilitation.

Dr. Rector says building snow forts, sledding, pulling a kid on a sled or just walking will help you stay fit this winter.

"The best exercise to do in the winter outside for your health is to bundle up and get outside and go for a walk," said Rector.

You get more of a workout in the cold, since it helps build cardiovascular endurance and is more work on your lungs, Rector says.

If you decide to walk in the snow, make sure you have a good pair of boots or socks.

"You will burn more calories, your heart rate will get a little bit higher. It will be an overall tougher workout than you would just running or walking on the road," said Rector.

No matter how you do it, Rector says the important thing is just getting out there.

"Getting active and just making that decision to start doing those things is the most important step you can make," said Rector.

Before you step outside, there are a few safety precautions you should take.

You need to bundle up with a thick jacket, hat, gloves, boots and socks.

When you're out there, you need to listen to your body. Rector says you probably shouldn't stay outside for more than a half hour.

You also need to stay hydrated and if you're new, start slow.
