Braving Road Conditions for Holiday Plans

The poor driving conditions may have changed some Iowa families holiday plans, but others aren't backing down just because of a foot of snow.

More than 93 million Americans will take a holiday trip this year. Here in Iowa, travelers have to take some extra precautions to get to their destination safely.

"Nothing messes your day up more than sliding off in the ditch," said Missourian Tony Jennings. He came up to Des Moines and over to Dennison for work Friday. He'll be back Sunday to visit family.

He said the roads around the metro have been the worst.

"From south coming up to Des Moines is actually pretty good until about 10 miles south of Des Moines, then it really got crummy."

The DOT is reporting the same thing. By Friday night, the metro was the only place in the state with completely covered roads. Roads should continue to improve throughout the weekend. You can check the latest road conditions map here.

"I'm hoping it stays clean and cleared up and the plows have done a decent job," said Melissa Lee who will make the two hour drive north to Clarion on Sunday to spend Christmas with her family regardless of the weather.

And John Meyer of Omaha has had a headache-of-a-day driving through central Iowa on I–35. It took two hours to get from Ames to Des Moines Friday evening.

"I think it was mainly just slow going. The roads are very ice and snow packed. Everybody's just crawling."

It might have taken a while, but Meyer said that's a better way to get from Point A to Point B.

"It is a little irritating seeing people flying by you going, ‘Oh wow! Are you crazy?" I saw a lot of cars and a number of semis in the ditch," Meyer said.

The DOT says its salt isn't working as well as it should because of the low temperatures. So make sure to watch out for ice when you travel.
