DES MOINES -- Thanks to giving central Iowans, the Des Moines Area Religious Council's food pantry is now able to increase the amount of food given to needy families.

"This season it seems like we have received so many large donations from businesses, from schools, from individuals. It's just been a blessing," said Eileen Boggess of the Urbandale Food Pantry.

For the first time in over a year DMARC has increased the amount of food they are giving needy families each month. They have increased the amount given each month from a three-day supply to a four-day supply. A significant increase in fresh fruit and canned protein goods and an encouraging sign for those who see the need each day.

"It is a wonderful feeling to know that we are able to fill the bags," said Boggess. "We have extra, our misc. shelf packed, usually there is nothing on there and we let families choose a little bit extra."

Now just because the pantry has a large surplus of food now doesn't mean it will stay that way. The spring and summer months are extremely slow for the food pantries and DMARC encourages people to continue to give all year long.
