Some Des Moines parents were furious to learn that their kids' school may close.

District officials told parents the news about the Gateway Secondary School, housed on DMPS Central Campus, Monday night.

It was created in 2009 and offers an international baccalaureate program. But similar programs are now available at other schools. And district officials want to save money by not doubling up.

Parents showed up to the school board meeting Tuesday night to voice their opinions.

"When I received the news yesterday, it really made me cry," said parent Gloria Aguilar at the meeting. "Because my daughter ... loves this school. Why do we want to close that school? Why don't you, instead of closing that school, go and see the schools that are not performing good, and then do something about it instead of closing good schools?" she asked the board.

The school board will come up with a final proposal for what to do January at the earliest.
