DES MOINES – Drake University students say they are used to hearing about crimes happening near campus, but Monday night's robbery was a little too close for comfort.

"One of them had a black hand gun," said Sgt. Jason Halifax of the Des Moines Police Department. "He pointed the black hand-gun at the two individuals and said 'Give us everything, take off your coats, empty your pockets.'"

It happened outside of Drake University's health building on Carpenter Ave. Monday night at 8:30 p.m.

Two male students told police they walked outside of the building, a car quickly pulled up to them and two black men jumped out. One had a gun and demanded their belongings. They took off with nearly $3,000 worth of iPhones, computers, cash and coats.

One of the phones had GPS and police began tracking.

"That was activated and officers they were able to track that back to an address in Oakridge," said Halifax.

They searched one of the apartments the GPS led them to at Oakridge Apartments on Center Street but found nothing. Outside however, they found one of the students' backpacks in the dumpster. Students were alerted of the armed robbery by campus security and the news has some shaken up.

"I was actually right by the area around the time it happened," said sophomore Lindsay Wesdorf. "I got back to my room and I got the email and it said there was a robbery of some sort and I realized I was right by the area at that time."

"Since it was so close I was like 'Wow, that is too close to comfort for me.' So it just freaked me out a little bit," said Janet Eckles, a Drake University Sophomore.

Police have no suspects at this time but are waiting for surveillance video from the health center. If you have any information about this crime contact Polk Co. Crime Stoppers: 515-223–1400.
